Pfizer Breast Cancer Lawsuit – Pfizer has been handed down yet another punitive damages verdict, this time in the amount of $34 million to Donna Kendall. Kendall claims to have used menopause syndrome reducing products manufactured under subsidiaries of Pfizer over the course of 11 years and developed breast cancer as a result. The Kendall verdict is only one of several cases involving menopause products sold by Pfizer. In October, Pfizer was found liable for $75 million in a similar suit filed by Connie Barton. A Pfizer spokesperson has stated that the drug maker plans to appeal both cases.
Sweat Lodge Lawsuit – James Arthur Ray was seen being led away in handcuffs after being charged with two counts of manslaughter. Ray is being charged after two of his norther Arizona self-help seminar “Spiritual Warrior” died, and nineteen others fell ill, during a sweat lodge exercise. Reports say Ray chided those who attempted to leave, but Legal Paramount spoke with one witness who said that simply was not the case. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said she stood up, stepped over Ray, and walked out about twenty to thirty minutes after entering the sweat lodge, and Ray said nothing.
Merck Vioxx Lawsuit – Merck shareholders who lost an estimated $28 billion due to losses associated with Vioxx, a pain reliever removed from the market in 2003 after studies showed increased chances of heart attack or strock, settle a $12.15 million suit earlier this week. The shareholders claimed that Merck executives breached their fiduciary responsibility, and continued to sell Vioxx after being made aware of the associated heart risks. More than 27,000 Vioxx users are believed to have died as a result of taking the drug. In 2007, Merck settled a personal injury lawsuit on behalf of family members for $4.85 billion.
