Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans Hands-In Resignation

Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans & Mayor Dave Bing

Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans hands-in his resignation today to Mayor Dave Bing. Assistant Chief Ralph Godbee is acting as interim chief.

Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans submitted his resignation Wednesday, to Mayor Dave Bing, after serving as chief under Bing since last year. Evans had replaced James Barren as chief in July, 2009.

“We appreciate the time and dedication that Warren Evans has given to the Detroit Police Department,” Bing said in a just-released statement. “He has put the department on a path to reducing crime. We entrust the leadership of A.C. Godbee, who will serve as Interim Chief, to continue to build upon this success for the department and the city.”

Assistant Chief Ralph Godbee is serving as interim chief in Evans absence.

According to John Roach, spokesperson for the Detroit Police Department, Evans would not be conducting any interviews for the press and other media concerning his resignation. Both Roach and Evans joined the department together after transferring from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

Council President Charles Pugh was quoted as saying, “Wow, I wonder what happened.” Pugh added that he considered Evans to be a good man and a good choice for chief at the time.

Evan’s resignation comes shortly after community activists blame his aggressive, military-style approach to policing on the fatal shooting death of a 7-year old girl by Detroit police.

The case is involved in an ongoing investigation by the Michigan State Police. Investigators are examining circumstances relating to the shooting, including the use of incendiary devices when police threw a flash-bang grenade into the residence, and the actual shooting of such a young victim by trained law enforcement.

A&E’s The First 48 reality show accompanied Detroit police on the raid, fueling even more animosity from the community.
